If your town or city is considering becoming a “sanctuary city”, in Massachusetts you are not alone in this pursuit.  Since the presidential election more than a half-dozen towns and cities have already voted on the matter.

“Once the new administration took office, we saw this trend where a lot of cities and towns wanted to get in on the action, wanted to pass really good, protective policies,” said Laura Rótolo, staff counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts.

“Sanctuary City” is not an official legal term, therefore the label is up for definition.  Various cities and town have patchworked policies to fit their goals like:  ,” like Newton, which just passed an ordinance in February. There are also sanctuary cities, like Somerville, and cities with trust acts, like Boston.”
