DESCRIPTION:Join the Needham Area Immigration Justice Task Force for a short presentation and Q&A with our new U.S. representative\, Jake Auchincloss. \nRegister Now \nAbout Representative Auchincloss\nJake was born and raised in Newton\, Massachusetts\, the son of a surgeon and scientist. They taught him to be a lifelong learner and to give back to the community. From the moment he could read\, Jake loved American history.  After graduating from Harvard College\, Jake joined the Marines. He commanded infantry in Afghanistan and special operations in Panama. He’s now a major in the reserves. \nRepresentative Jake Auchincloss \nWhen Jake returned home to Newton\, he wanted to continue service. He won election to the Newton City Council in 2015 and topped the ticket in 2019. His favorite part of being a city councilor was constituent services and communication.  Jake chaired the transportation & public safety committee and was a member of the land use committee.  \nHis work at the intersections of (a) housing & racial justice\, and (b) transportation & the environment earned him endorsements from Progressive Newton and environmental advocates. Jake was the first city councilor to endorse Ruthanne Fuller\, the first woman to be Mayor of Newton. While serving as a city councilor on nights and weekends\, Jake managed teams at both a Fortune 100 and a startup. He led product development in cybersecurity and insurance. He has degrees in economics and finance from Harvard College and MIT Sloan. Marshall \nImmigrant\, Legal Scholar\, Groundbreaking\, Supreme Judicial Court! \nChief Justice Margaret H. Marshall (ret.) served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court as an Associate Justice from 1996 to 1999\, and as a Chief Justice from 1999-1020.  She was the first woman to hold the Chief Justice position in the Court’s more than three hundred year history. A graduate of Witwatersand University (Johannesburg\, South Africa)\, Harvard University\, and Yale Law School\, Chief Justice Marshall gained a national reputation for both her landmark decisions and her reforms of the Massachusetts court system. \nDuring her fourteen years on the Supreme Judicial Court\, Chief Justice Marshall wrote many groundbreaking opinions\, includin the 2003 decision in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health that made Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. Stay tuned for a new date. \nDid you know the 175\,000 undocumented residents of the Commonwealth live in a constant state of fear of deportation? That number of people could fill two and a half Gillette Stadiums or close to five Fenway Parks! Passage of the Safe Communities Act will ensure both the fair treatment of undocumented people and public safety. \nPlease join us at the public hearing for the Safe Communities Act on Monday\, December 2\, 2019 at 10 am in Gardner Auditorium at the State House. RSVP and/or volunteer for a shift. \nGardner Auditiorium needs to be filled all day so we are signing up for shifts. ROYAL BLUE is the color of support. \nIf you can’t make it to the hearing\, no problem! There are many ways to support the campaign: \n1. SUMMARY:Suitcase Stories
DESCRIPTION:Come hear from local residents about their refugee and immigration stories while supporting resettlement efforts . \nSuitcase Stories is a traveling live performance series that features foreign and U.S.-born residents sharing refugee and immigrant stories. The format of storytelling in a theatrical setting is especially suited to these powerful tales of real-life experience. In 2017\, nearly 2\,000 people saw a live performance of Suitcase Stories and thousands more watched a taped episode on PBS television. The responses from those audience members spoke of how the performance challenged and expanded their perceptions of refugees and immigrants. Proceeds from the performances help support refugees and immigrants participating in resettlement\, education\, employment\, and citizenship programs through the International Institute of New England. SUMMARY:The Children’s Clothing and Toy Drive
DESCRIPTION:The Children’s Clothing and Toy Drive will hold a one day special Collection Event at the Needham First Baptist Church. Details (including items/ ages and gender of children) are listed at link below to help select age appropriate toys\, equipment\, and clothing. \nhttp://bit.ly/DonateChildrensToys \nSponsored by the local West Suburban Resettle Together (a group made up of Needham & Wellesley Faith Communities and Caring Individuals) and IINE (International Institute of New England assisting immigrants and refugees since 1919)\, this project needs the community’s support. Partnering with St. Paul’s Church in Bedford\, this small local group wants to provide 50 immigrant children with the clothing and equipment necessary for an enjoyable and safe summer. These children and their families arrived over the past year primarily from Afghanistan\, Iraq\, Congo\, Burundi\, and Bhutan. \nAdditional drop off will take place during March and April. To coordinate additional donation efforts\, please contact: jessicaday257@yahoo.com in Needham or mindy.perry@gmail.com in Wellesley \nA bottle of sunscreen\, a pair of shorts\, or a small backyard kiddie pool would delight these children (ages 1 – 16). In addition\, donated books will make summer reading enjoyable. New toys/equipment are preferred while new or almost new (gently used) summer clothing and books will be accepted. \nThis project will end on May 5 when the children and their families will attend a delightful afternoon of fun\, games and snacks at IINE/Lowell; with local Resettle Together volunteers\, the children will happily select and receive generously donated summer clothing and toys/beach equipment. \nSpring Cleaning often means finding outgrown clothing and books buried in closets just waiting for these refugee children. As spring approaches\, children’s dreams of summer are not very far behind.

DESCRIPTION:In the Country We Love – The Moving\, Heartbreaking Story of One Woman’s Extraordinary Resilience\n\nAs part of  a Needham-wide “read” focusing on the issue of immigration\, TBS will be hosting a discussion of In the Country We Love by Diane Guerrero and Michelle Burford.  The discussion will be co-led by Elise Gottesman of the TBS Tzekek Leadership Team and Litzy Gastelum\, a Needham High senior and member of the Needham Diversity Initiative. \nDiane Guerrero\, the television actress from “Orange is the New Black” and “Jane the Virgin\,” was just fourteen years old on the day her parents and older brother were detained and deported while she was at school.  Born in the U.S.\, Guerrero remained in the country\, continuing her education and depending on the kindness of family friends. Many undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. have citizen children whose lives here are just as precarious and whose stories haven’t been told. TBS members and guests are welcome.  Please RSVP to Deena Siegel\, deenams@comcast.net.

The panel will end with suggestions for getting involved to make a difference. \nPanelists include Howard Silverman\, partner in RSST Law Group\, liaison with ICE for New England Chapter\, American Immigration Lawyers Association; Amy Grunder\, Director of Legislative Affairs\, Mass.
