Marshall \nImmigrant\, Legal Scholar\, Groundbreaking\, Supreme Judicial Court! \nChief Justice Margaret H. Marshall (ret.) served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court as an Associate Justice from 1996 to 1999\, and as a Chief Justice from 1999-1020.  She was the first woman to hold the Chief Justice position in the Court’s more than three hundred year history. A graduate of Witwatersand University (Johannesburg\, South Africa)\, Harvard University\, and Yale Law School\, Chief Justice Marshall gained a national reputation for both her landmark decisions and her reforms of the Massachusetts court system. \nDuring her fourteen years on the Supreme Judicial Court\, Chief Justice Marshall wrote many groundbreaking opinions\, includin the 2003 decision in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health that made Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. DESCRIPTION:Come hear from local residents about their refugee and immigration stories while supporting resettlement efforts . \nSuitcase Stories is a traveling live performance series that features foreign and U.S.-born residents sharing refugee and immigrant stories. The format of storytelling in a theatrical setting is especially suited to these powerful tales of real-life experience. In 2017\, nearly 2\,000 people saw a live performance of Suitcase Stories and thousands more watched a taped episode on PBS television. The responses from those audience members spoke of how the performance challenged and expanded their perceptions of refugees and immigrants. Proceeds from the performances help support refugees and immigrants participating in resettlement\, education\, employment\, and citizenship programs through the International Institute of New England. DESCRIPTION:This event is an an interfaith engagement focused on immigration enforcement.   \nWe expect leaders from about 5 Anglo congregations and about 5 immigrant congregations to gather for food and discuss: \n\npairing up to provide accompaniment for families of the detained\ncoordination of legal support for ICE detainees\n\nThere will be a simple meal but we will have a full program. As part of the program\, we will discuss the case of an injured worker detained by ICE\, for whom Casa has done legal support and accompaniment over the last 10 days. \nThe event will be Sunday May 21\, 2017 between 4:30 and 6:30 pm at St. Stephens Parish Hall.  \nThe church is located at 221 Concord Street in Framingham.
